Planning a wedding in Scotland is a unique experience. From booking your dream castle venue to arranging a piper for the ceremony, there are Scotland-specific tasks that most wedding guides don't cover. Here's your comprehensive timeline.
18–12 Months Before
- Set your budget — The average Scottish wedding costs around £20,000–£30,000, though Edinburgh and Glasgow venues tend to run higher. See our full cost breakdown.
- Book your venue — Popular Scottish venues (especially castles, country houses, and barn venues) book 12–18 months ahead. Start here.
- Choose your date — Consider Scottish weather: May–September is peak season. Midweek weddings are significantly cheaper.
- Check legal requirements — In Scotland, you need to submit a Marriage Notice to the local registrar at least 29 days before the ceremony. If either partner lives outside Scotland, plan for 6–8 weeks.
- Book your photographer — The best Scottish wedding photographers book up fast. Look for someone who knows the light (and the rain). Read our photography tips.
12–9 Months Before
- Book your celebrant — Scotland allows humanist and interfaith ceremonies, which are hugely popular. Browse celebrants and book early.
- Arrange catering — If your venue doesn't include catering, start tastings now. Scottish caterers often offer locally sourced menus featuring the best of Scottish produce.
- Book entertainment — Ceilidh band? Piper? DJ? A combination? Read our ceilidh band guide.
- Choose your florist — Scottish florists create stunning wildflower and thistle arrangements that are increasingly popular.
9–6 Months Before
- Send save-the-dates — Especially important if guests are travelling to the Highlands or islands.
- Shop for outfits — Kilts need to be ordered 8–12 weeks ahead if buying, or 4–6 weeks for hire. Bridal gowns can take 6+ months.
- Book transport — Whether it's a classic car, a vintage bus, or a boat across a loch, arrange transport now.
- Arrange accommodation — Many Scottish venues have on-site rooms. Block-book nearby hotels or B&Bs for guests.
6–3 Months Before
- Send invitations — Work with a stationery designer and include a map and travel info, especially for remote venues.
- Book hair and makeup — Schedule a trial run.
- Plan your ceremony — Write vows, choose readings, decide on a handfasting ceremony or quaich drinking.
- Arrange a wedding cake — Scottish bakers can create anything from a classic tiered cake to a tower of tablet and shortbread.
3 Months to the Day
- Submit your Marriage Notice — Both partners must do this at least 29 days before. Don't leave this to the last minute.
- Confirm all vendors — Check timings, access, and contingency plans (Scottish weather!).
- Final dress/kilt fittings
- Plan the order of the day — Ceremony, drinks reception, meal, speeches, first dance, ceilidh.
- Prepare a wet weather plan — This is Scotland. Have a Plan B. Your photographer will know the best indoor spots.
The Week Before
- Confirm final numbers with caterers and venue
- Break in your shoes
- Prepare a day-of timeline for your bridal party — or let your wedding planner handle it
- Pack an emergency kit (safety pins, plasters, paracetamol, phone charger, umbrella)
- Relax and enjoy the excitement!
