Nothing gets a Scottish wedding party going like a ceilidh. Whether your guests are seasoned dancers or complete beginners, a great ceilidh band will have everyone on the floor within minutes. Here's everything you need to know.

What is a Ceilidh?

A ceilidh (pronounced "KAY-lee") is a social gathering with traditional Scottish music and dancing. At weddings, a ceilidh band plays sets of traditional tunes while calling out the dance moves so everyone can join in — no experience needed.

Why Book a Ceilidh Band?

  • Everyone dances — Unlike a DJ set where some people sit out, ceilidh dances are designed for groups. Even your most reserved uncle will be spinning around the floor.
  • It's interactive — The band caller explains each dance step by step before the music starts.
  • It's uniquely Scottish — If you have guests from outside Scotland, this will be the highlight of their trip.
  • It's a great icebreaker — Nothing bonds people faster than a Strip the Willow.

Popular Ceilidh Dances

A good ceilidh band will pick dances to suit the room, but here are the classics:

  • Gay Gordons — A gentle starter, perfect for all ages. Partners march and turn together.
  • Strip the Willow — High energy and slightly chaotic. The signature Scottish wedding dance.
  • Dashing White Sergeant — Groups of three face each other. Brilliant fun.
  • Canadian Barn Dance — Simple and great for beginners. Partners change throughout.
  • Orcadian Strip the Willow — A slightly calmer version of Strip the Willow, good later in the evening when energy is flagging.
  • Virginia Reel / Eightsome Reel — The grand finale. Organised chaos at its finest.

How to Book

  • Book 9–12 months ahead — Good ceilidh bands are booked every Saturday from April to October.
  • Expect to pay £800–£1,800 — Depends on band size (3–6 piece), travel distance, and whether they do a DJ set between ceilidh sets.
  • Ask about a DJ hybrid — Many ceilidh bands offer a "ceilidh + DJ" package: 2 ceilidh sets plus DJ sets in between and after.
  • Check the caller — A great caller makes or breaks the ceilidh. Ask if they explain dances clearly and keep the energy up.
  • Discuss the set list — Agree which dances will be played, and whether you want a specific song for the first dance.

Tips for the Night

  • Warn guests in advance — suggest flat shoes!
  • Schedule the ceilidh after the meal when everyone has had a drink or two
  • Join in the first dance as a couple, then invite everyone onto the floor
  • Keep water on the tables — ceilidh dancing is a workout
  • Don't panic if it looks chaotic — that's the point
